External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to Mauritius, where he has met with several key political figures to discuss ways to strengthen the relationship between India and Mauritius. This visit highlights the strong and deep ties between the two countries and demonstrates India’s commitment to its partnership with Mauritius.
On Tuesday, Jaishankar arrived in Mauritius and immediately began meetings with local leaders. One of the first leaders he met was Arvin Boolell, the Opposition Leader. They discussed the importance of the India-Mauritius relationship and how it benefits the prosperity and well-being of the Indian Ocean region. Jaishankar appreciated Boolell’s support for strengthening the ties between the two nations.
Jaishankar also had a productive meeting with Xavier Luc Duval, the leader of the Parti Mauricien Social Democrat. The two exchanged views on how to deepen the partnership between India and Mauritius, focusing on various aspects of their bilateral relationship.
During his visit, Jaishankar met with former Prime Ministers Paul Berenger and Navin Ramgoolam. His conversation with Berenger touched on contemporary global issues and how they impact India-Mauritius relations. Berenger, who served as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2005, expressed his support for the ongoing relationship between the two countries.
In his meeting with Ramgoolam, who has served multiple terms as Prime Minister, Jaishankar discussed the longstanding partnership between India and Mauritius. Ramgoolam, whose ancestors migrated from Bihar to Mauritius, highlighted the broad-based desire to further grow this relationship. He served as Prime Minister from December 1995 to September 2000, and again from 2005 to 2014.
Throughout his visit, Jaishankar emphasized India’s unwavering commitment to its partnership with Mauritius. His meetings with key political leaders underscore the importance of maintaining and deepening these ties. The discussions focused on various aspects of their relationship, including economic cooperation, cultural ties, and strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region.
