In a significant anti-Maoist operation, twelve Maoists were killed today in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district. The operation, which lasted for over six hours, also led to the recovery of several automatic weapons.
Acting on a tip-off about nearly 15 Maoists camping near Vandoli village close to the Chhattisgarh border, the Maharashtra Police launched a massive operation from Gadchiroli around 10 am. Seven C-60 parties of the police, led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, ventured into the dense forests for this anti-Maoist mission.
The operation saw a heavy exchange of fire starting in the afternoon and continuing intermittently till late evening. The fierce encounter lasted for over six hours. During the firefight, a sub-inspector and a jawan from the C-60 unit sustained bullet injuries. Fortunately, both officers are reported to be out of danger and have been evacuated to Nagpur for further treatment.
The police have recovered the bodies of twelve Maoists and seven automatic weapons from the site. The weapons recovered include three AK-47 rifles, two INSAS rifles, one carbine, and a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR).
Among those killed is DVCM Laxman Atram, alias Vishal Atram, who was in charge of the Tipagad Dalam. The identification of the remaining eleven Maoists is still underway, and the police have launched a search operation in the area to ensure no Maoists remain hidden in the vicinity.
The Maharashtra Police continue to maintain a high level of vigilance in the region, especially in the dense forest areas along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border.
