In a significant decision, the Supreme Court has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to publish the marks obtained by all students who appeared in the NEET-UG 2024 exam on its website. This directive aims to enhance transparency in the examination process. The court ordered that the results be published by Saturday noon, city-wise and centre-wise, while ensuring that students’ identities remain anonymous.
The order came in response to petitions filed by students seeking transparency and fairness in the NEET-UG 2024 examination. Allegations of paper leakage and malpractices during the exam prompted the court to intervene and ensure accountability.
Continued Hearings on Allegations of Paper Leak
The Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, conducted a day-long hearing on the matter. The court raised pertinent questions regarding the alleged paper leak and the steps taken by NTA to prevent such incidents. Concerns were also raised about the distribution and security of question papers.
During the hearing, the Solicitor General informed the court about the investigative measures taken by agencies like the CBI to trace the chain of events leading to the alleged malpractices. The court sought clarifications on the handling of question papers and the integrity of the examination process.
The petitioners’ counsel argued that there were significant lapses in the conduct of the NEET-UG exam by NTA. They pointed out instances where question papers were mishandled, leading to suspicions of leakage and subsequent distribution on social media platforms. Evidence presented included Telegram videos showing solved papers being circulated before the exam.
Responding, the bench questioned the plausibility of mass-scale paper leakage and emphasized the need for stringent security measures in the examination process. The Solicitor General clarified that measures such as GPS tracking and digital lockers were employed to safeguard question papers.
Future Steps and Court’s Consideration
The Supreme Court indicated its intention to continue hearing pleas related to the alleged malpractices in the NEET-UG 2024 exams on July 22. It expressed reluctance to cancel the entire examination based solely on isolated incidents without substantial evidence of widespread malpractice.
The Supreme Court’s directive to publish NEET-UG 2024 exam results with masked identities marks a pivotal moment in addressing concerns of transparency and fairness.
