The driver of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express claimed he heard a loud explosion just before several coaches of the train derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda on Thursday. However, DGP Prashant Kumar stated there was no explosion in the train accident.
At least three people have lost their lives, and multiple injuries have been reported. Medical and emergency teams are on-site. According to government sources, the driver said he applied emergency brakes after hearing an explosion. A passenger also reported hearing a mild explosion before the mishap, followed by a strong jolt that derailed their coach.
The derailment occurred between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations, affecting at least eight coaches. A 40-member medical team and 15 ambulances are at the scene, with more en route, according to Relief Commissioner Kumar. Senior railway and local administration officials are overseeing rescue operations about 150 km from Lucknow.
Deputy Chief Minister Pathak emphasized the priority of saving lives and providing the best treatment for the injured. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the local administration to assist affected passengers and ensure proper medical treatment.
A high-level probe has been ordered, and compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be provided to the families of the victims, while those with serious injuries will receive Rs 2.5 lakh each. The Indian Railways has commenced relief operations, and medical vans have reached the accident site.
