The United States has called on India to support its efforts to establish a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. This message was conveyed by Vedant Patel, the Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, during a press briefing on Thursday. Patel emphasized the importance of cooperation between the US and India in various key areas, highlighting the strong bilateral relationship.
Strengthening US-India Relations
Patel noted that India remains a vital partner for the United States. This partnership was demonstrated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the US last summer. The visit underscored the strong ties and shared interests between the two nations.
Ukraine Conflict and International Response
Regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Patel reiterated the US position that Russia’s aggression and violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty must be addressed. He emphasized that the US is urging all its partners, including India, to support efforts aimed at achieving an enduring and just peace in Ukraine.
Prime Minister Modi recently visited Russia from July 8-9 for the 22nd India-Russia annual summit. This visit attracted significant attention from the West due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict. It was Modi’s first visit to Russia since the war between Moscow and Kyiv began in 2022.
Modi’s Stance on Ukraine
During his talks with President Vladimir Putin on July 9, Prime Minister Modi expressed that a resolution to the Ukraine conflict cannot be achieved through military means. He stressed that peace efforts cannot succeed amid violence and called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the situation.
India has consistently defended its “special and privileged strategic partnership” with Russia. Despite the Ukraine conflict, India has maintained its strong ties with Russia and continued to engage with Moscow on various fronts.
India’s Position on the Ukraine Conflict
India has not condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Instead, it has consistently advocated for resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. India’s stance reflects its broader foreign policy approach, prioritizing peaceful solutions and maintaining balanced relations with major global powers.
The State Department also reiterated its call for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine’s sovereign territory. This demand aligns with the broader international community’s stance on upholding Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The US is seeking India’s support in its efforts to achieve a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Russia and his discussions with President Putin underscore India’s complex position and its emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
