A major fire broke out on a cargo ship traveling from Mundra, Gujarat, to Colombo, Sri Lanka, about 102 nautical miles southwest of Goa on Friday. The vessel, carrying dangerous goods, faced multiple explosions on its front part. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) responded quickly to the emergency.
Upon learning about the fire, the Indian Coast Guard immediately dispatched a ship to the scene at full speed. They also sent a Dornier aircraft to assess the situation from the air. The Coast Guard ship arrived despite challenging weather conditions and rough seas and began efforts to control the fire.

The Coast Guard reported that the ship was carrying Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) cargo, which made the fire particularly hazardous. The crew aboard the vessel, who were initially panicked, received reassurance from the Coast Guard personnel. In addition, two more Coast Guard ships were sent from Goa to assist in the firefighting efforts.
Successful Rescue Operation Off Kerala Coast
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, the Indian Coast Guard successfully rescued 11 crew members from a fishing boat off the coast of Kerala. The boat had been stranded due to severe weather conditions and was taking on water after sustaining a hull rupture.
The rescue mission began when a Dornier aircraft spotted the distressed fishing boat on the night of July 16. The Indian Coast Guard’s ship, ‘Saksham,’ was promptly redirected to help the boat. To support the rescue operation, another Coast Guard ship, ‘Abhinav,’ was deployed, along with an advanced light helicopter.
A technical team from the Coast Guard boarded the fishing boat to address the flooding and provide necessary assistance. Their efforts were successful, and all 11 crew members were safely rescued, along with the boat itself. The Coast Guard’s quick response and coordination ensured the safety of everyone involved.
