In a major drug bust, South African police have discovered one of the largest methamphetamine manufacturing labs in the country’s history. The raid took place on a farm in Groblersdal, a small town located in Limpopo province. During the operation, law enforcement officials seized a significant amount of chemicals used in producing illegal drugs, including acetone and crystal meth. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is around 2 billion rand, which is approximately $109.5 million.
Four people have been arrested in connection with this operation. Among the suspects are two Mexican nationals, which is unusual and makes this case more complex.
Katlego Mogale, the national spokesperson for the Hawks, an elite police unit involved in the raid, highlighted that the involvement of foreign nationals increases the difficulty of their task. It is not yet clear whether the drugs were intended for distribution within South Africa or to other countries.

South Africa is known for being a significant drug transit point due to its strategic location and international trade connections. The country is also seeing a rise in the local market for synthetic drugs. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), methamphetamine trafficking is increasingly becoming a concern across Africa.
As the investigation continues, the arrested suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Monday. They face serious charges including the manufacturing, distribution, and possession of illegal drugs.
