An Indian student from Kerala, identified as Albin Shinto, is feared to have drowned while swimming in the Jugla canal in Riga, Latvia. The incident occurred on July 18, 2024, while Albin and four friends were enjoying a swim in the canal.
According to reports, Albin began to struggle in the water, leading to a dangerous situation where two of his friends tried to rescue him. Unfortunately, those friends also started to struggle and risked drowning themselves. A nearby fisherman, who was passing by, noticed the emergency and quickly used his boat to rescue the two friends who were in distress. Despite his efforts, Albin was unable to be saved and is presumed to have drowned.
Upon being notified, local police and rescue teams arrived at the scene and initiated a search operation. However, as darkness fell, the search had to be suspended for the night. Initially, the friends were informed that the search would resume the following day. Later, they were told that the search would be postponed until Monday due to “limited resources available for large-scale and lengthy search operations.”
