Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has called on all Members of Parliament to maintain decorum by refraining from interruptions when fellow members speak in the House. This appeal was relayed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju following an all-party meeting.
“Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized our commitment to strengthening democracy by ensuring that members speak without interference,” Rijiju stated. He highlighted that during a special session when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was addressing the Motion of Thanks to the President, there were disruptions in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Singh’s appeal underscored that such interruptions are detrimental to parliamentary democracy and that the Prime Minister’s speeches should be attentively heard by both the House and the nation.
Rijiju expressed gratitude towards the floor leaders of all parties for their constructive suggestions ahead of the upcoming Monsoon session. “We have taken the suggestions from all floor leaders. Ensuring the smooth functioning of Parliament is the responsibility of both the government and the opposition,” he added.
The meeting saw participation from notable leaders, including Congress’ Jairam Ramesh and K Suresh, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, RJD’s Abhay Kushwaha, JD(U)’s Sanjay Jha, AAP’s Sanjay Singh, SP leader Ramgopal Yadav, and NCP’s Praful Patel.
Jairam Ramesh mentioned that the JD(U) and YSRCP called for special category status for Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, respectively, while the TDP remained silent on the issue. BJD leader Sasmit Patra reiterated his party’s demand for special category status for Odisha.
The Monsoon session, set to begin on Monday and run until August 12, is expected to be contentious. The opposition is preparing to challenge the NDA government on several fronts, including the NEET paper leak case and railway safety. The government is slated to present six bills during this session, including one to replace the 90-year-old Aircraft Act, and seek Parliament’s approval for the budget of Jammu and Kashmir, currently under central rule.
