In a major tragedy, the INS Brahmaputra, a significant guided missile frigate of the Indian Navy, caught fire on Sunday during routine repairs at Mumbai’s naval dockyard. Despite the gallant efforts of the ship’s crew, Naval Dockyard personnel, and surrounding warships, the guided missile frigate sustained significant damage from the fire. Regrettably, the INS Brahmaputra has now been declared irreversibly tilted, dealing a serious blow to India’s naval power. By Monday afternoon, attempts to stabilize the ship proved unsuccessful as it began to lean dangerously to one side. Fortunately, there have been no casualties reported, offering a small silver lining amidst the upsetting event. Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi briefed defence minister Rajnath Singh on the development, which may have damaged some key equipment and systems.
In an official statement, the Indian Navy confirmed that they have safely evacuated and accounted for all junior sailors, however, one of the sailor is missing and a massive search is underway amidst ongoing cleanup and evaluation of potential fire hazards. While Naval authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and consequent listing of INS Brahmaputra, this tragic incident highlights the inherent hazards of maintaining and operating navy vessels, prompting a detailed investigation to determine the exact conditions that caused the accident.
It was in April 2000 when India had commissioned INS Brahmaputra as the flagship of the “Brahmaputra” class of guided missile frigates manufactured in India. The ship boasts an impressive arsenal, including torpedo launchers, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, and medium and close-range guns. It can exceed 27 knots, with a displacement of 5,300 tonnes and dimensions of 125 metres in length and 14.4 metres in breadth.
Despite the challenges that the unfortunate incident poses, the Indian Navy perseveres in carrying out its mission with tenacity and resolve, reaffirming its critical role in defending maritime security and national interests. To maintain peace and stability in the waterways patrols, the Indian Navy demonstrates unwavering determination to overcome obstacles by taking proactive steps and exercising strategic vision.
