In a significant move towards international collaboration on sustainable energy, the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, recently visited the Adani Group’s massive renewable energy project sites at Khavda and Mundra Port in Gujarat, India. This visit highlights the growing global interest in renewable energy and showcases Bhutan’s commitment to eco-friendly practices.
During their visit, both the King and the Prime Minister were shown around the Adani Group’s impressive 30 GW renewable energy site at Khavda and the adjoining Mundra Port. The visit was noted for its focus on fostering international cooperation and exchanging ideas on green energy.
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, expressed his gratitude on social media, sharing photographs from the visit and highlighting his admiration for Bhutan’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
The Khavda project, developed by Adani Green Energy Limited, is set to be the largest renewable energy plant in the world. Located in the arid region of Kutch in Gujarat, this project spans over 538 square kilometers of barren land. The company plans to invest approximately Rs 1.5 lakh crore into this ambitious project. Once completed, it will significantly contribute to India’s renewable energy capacity and its goal of reducing carbon emissions.
Broader Environmental Commitments
The visit by the Bhutanese leaders aligns with India’s broader environmental goals. At the COP26 summit in 2021, India committed to the “Panchamrit” pledge, which includes several key targets: achieving 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy from renewable sources, and reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030. Additionally, India aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45% and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.
The site has also attracted international attention; last week, Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India, visited the project. His visit underscores the global recognition of India’s efforts in advancing renewable energy and combating climate change.
The collaboration between Bhutan and the Adani Group represents a step forward in international partnerships for green energy. With Bhutan’s strong track record in environmental stewardship and India’s ambitious renewable energy goals, the partnership is expected to contribute significantly to a sustainable and greener future.
