Dr. Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania, visited the Parliament House Complex in New Delhi. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla welcomed Dr. Ackson and expressed hope that her visit would enhance the friendly relations between India and Tanzania.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Birla highlighted the longstanding friendship between India and Tanzania and expressed his desire to further strengthen these relations. He emphasized the importance of regular exchanges of parliamentary delegations and discussions on common interests to enhance parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
During their meeting, Birla proposed establishing Zonal Training Centres for Parliamentary Studies, Training, and Capacity Building. These centres aim to support democratic institutions worldwide by providing training and resources to parliamentarians.
Promoting Women’s Empowerment
Birla took to his official X handle to share details of his meeting with Dr. Ackson. He mentioned India’s commitment to empowering women through milestone legislations like the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Vidheyak.’ This bill, also known as the Women’s Reservation Bill, aims to enhance women’s leadership roles in India.

In another post, Birla emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the Indian Parliament and the IPU. He expressed hope that through the IPU, democratic institutions around the world would become more meaningful. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening parliamentary cooperation between India and Tanzania.

Warm Welcome to the Delegation
Birla extended a warm welcome to Dr. Ackson and her delegation on behalf of the Indian Parliament and the people of India. He recalled his brief interaction with her during the recent BRICS Conference and expressed joy at welcoming her to the Parliament of India to witness the Budget Session proceedings.
During the visit, Birla informed the delegation about the new Parliament building, which showcases the arts, crafts, culture, music, and history of India. He described the building as a symbol of the hopes and aspirations of over a billion Indians. Constructed last year, the new Parliament House has already seen the passage of several significant laws, including the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Celebrating Indian General Elections
Birla spoke about India’s general elections, describing them as a grand festival celebrated by the world’s largest democracy. With an estimated one billion voters, the recent general elections saw participation from around 650 million people. Birla highlighted the Indian Constitution’s guarantee of voting rights for every citizen, ensuring that no voter is left behind, even establishing polling stations for a single voter if necessary.
