The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced revised results for the NEET-UG 2024 exam following a recent Supreme Court decision. The court instructed the NTA to withdraw compensatory marks that had been previously awarded to a select group of students due to an error in a Physics question. Students can now check their updated scores by visiting the NTA’s official website, exams.nta.ac.in.
Error in Textbook Leads to Controversy
Earlier, the NTA had decided to give extra marks to some students who had answered a Physics question incorrectly, citing a mistake in their old Class 12 NCERT science textbook. This question, labeled “Question No. 29,” was found to have two possible correct answers instead of one. However, the Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that only one of these answers would be considered correct, and students who answered the other way would not receive compensatory marks.
Supreme Court’s Decision on Correct Answer
The court directed the director of IIT Delhi to assemble a team of three experts to determine the correct answer to the controversial Physics question. By noon the next day, IIT Delhi’s experts submitted their report, confirming that only one specific answer, option No. 4, would be considered correct. Consequently, the court mandated that marks be awarded based solely on this answer.
The revised results mean that students who had initially scored a perfect 720 out of 720 will now lose four marks. This adjustment comes as a significant change for many students who had achieved top scores. Despite this, the court decided against canceling the exam or ordering a retest, dismissing petitions that had called for these measures.
