On Thursday, Nepalese authorities recovered the black box from the Saurya Airlines aircraft that crashed on Wednesday, killing 18 people.
Hansa Raj Pandey, the deputy director general of the Civil Aviation Authority, stated that the black box has been handed over to an investigation team. This team, led by Ratish Chandra Lal, a former director general of the Civil Aviation Authority, consists of four other experts. They have 45 days to determine the cause of the crash.
The Saurya Airlines Bombardier CRJ-200 was headed to Pokhara and was carrying 19 passengers and crew members. Shortly after taking off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the aircraft caught fire.

Among the 19 people on board, only one survived. The pilot, Captain Manish Raj Shakya, is currently in critical condition and is receiving treatment at Kathmandu Medical College. Despite being in the ICU, Captain Shakya’s condition is stable, and he is able to speak.
The crash claimed the lives of two crew members, technical staff from the airline, and a family of three, including a four-year-old boy. The bodies of the victims are being identified through post-mortem examinations and are expected to be released to their families on Friday.
Reports indicate that Captain Shakya survived because the cockpit was severed by a freight container just before the rest of the aircraft burst into flames. This separation is believed to have saved his life.
As the investigation proceeds, the aviation community and the public await answers about what caused this tragic accident. The recovery of the black box is a crucial step in uncovering the truth and preventing similar incidents in the future.
