Israel’s Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, recently highlighted the robust relationship between Israel and India, emphasizing the importance of people-to-people connections in strengthening these ties. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Gilon reflected on the significant visits by leaders from both nations and the deep historical connections that continue to influence their partnership.
Gilon praised the landmark visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling them “game changers” for the relationship between the two countries. Modi’s visit to Israel in July 2017 was the first by an Indian Prime Minister, marking a significant milestone.
This was followed by Netanyahu’s visit to India in January 2018, during which he was warmly welcomed by Modi at the airport.
According to Gilon, the strong people-to-people ties between Israelis and Indians play a crucial role in their relationship. He noted that many Israelis visit India after their military service, often staying for extended periods. This ongoing exchange contributes to a deep-seated connection between the two nations.
Gilon also spoke about the historical presence of Jews in India, which spans over 2,500 years. He pointed out that Indian Jews have been an integral part of the country’s diverse cultural fabric. Historical figures like General Jacob and the Sassoon family from Mumbai have left lasting legacies in India through their charitable works and contributions.
Highlighting the historical context, Gilon mentioned the support that Israel provided to India in the 1960s, particularly in defense cooperation. He also recalled the role of Indians in the Anglo-Indian army during World War I, which contributed to the liberation of the region that later became Israel.
The Ambassador acknowledged that India and Israel are now strategic partners with a warm and forward-looking relationship. In 2022-23, the two countries celebrated 30 years of diplomatic relations.
Gilon commended Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for their strong support of Israel and their recognition of the public’s backing for their policies.
Despite the strong ties, Gilon noted that India has also taken a balanced approach to recent conflicts. Prime Minister Modi was among the first world leaders to condemn the recent Hamas attack on Israel, but India has also called for a complete ceasefire and the release of hostages, while supporting a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
