Maritime Security and International Law
Discussing maritime security, Jaishankar underscored the significance of the SLOCs in the South China Sea for the prosperity and development of the Indo-Pacific region. He advocated for a substantive, effective, and consistent code of conduct with international law, emphasizing that it should not undermine the legitimate rights and interests of nations not involved in the discussions.
Jaishankar’s remarks gained additional significance due to the attendance of his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, at the summit. The South China Sea, rich in resources, is seen as a potential flashpoint for global conflict, with China claiming most of the area. At the same time, The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan have counterclaims.
In addition to maritime security, Jaishankar called for de-escalation and restraint in Gaza. He noted India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine and expressed concern over attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. He affirmed India’s independent efforts to ensure the safety and security of maritime shipping.
Conflict in Ukraine
Addressing the conflict in Ukraine, Jaishankar underscored the importance of dialogue and diplomacy for resolution. He mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently engaged in discussions with both President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine, reiterating India’s readiness to contribute to peace efforts in any possible manner.
Jaishankar’s comprehensive address at the EAS Foreign Ministers Meeting highlighted India’s commitment to regional stability, international law, humanitarian assistance, and diplomatic dialogue. His statements on the South China Sea and other global issues reflect India’s proactive stance in promoting peace and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
