Om Prakash Mathur, a seasoned BJP leader from Rajasthan, has been appointed as the new Governor of Sikkim. A former Rajya Sabha MP and state BJP president, Mathur has announced his retirement from active politics following his new appointment to this Constitutional post. At 72, Mathur hails from Bali in Rajasthan’s Pali district and has a rich background with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Groomed by former Vice President and BJP leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Mathur has held several key roles, including the general secretary in-charge of Gujarat BJP. He played a significant part in the BJP’s recent electoral success in Chhattisgarh and was once considered a potential Chief Ministerial candidate in Rajasthan.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma extended his congratulations, expressing confidence in Mathur’s ability to guide Sikkim towards good governance. “I firmly believe your able guidance and leadership will put Sikkim on the path of good governance and set new standards,” Sharma said in a post on X.
In a series of other gubernatorial appointments, President Droupadi Murmu has named Lakshman Prasad Acharya as the Governor of Assam, with additional charge of Manipur. Gulab Chand Kataria, currently the Governor of Assam, has been appointed as the Governor of Punjab and the Administrator of Chandigarh. Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde has been appointed Governor of Rajasthan, Jishnu Dev Varma of Telangana, and Santosh Kumar Gangwar of Jharkhand. Raman Deka has been named Governor of Chhattisgarh and CH Vijayashankar of Meghalaya. CP Radhakrishnan, currently the Jharkhand Governor with additional charge of Telangana, has been appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra.
These appointments will take effect from the dates the appointees assume their respective offices.
