In the past five years, 633 Indian students have died abroad due to various causes. This information was shared by Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs, in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The causes of these deaths include natural reasons, accidents, and medical conditions.

Highest Deaths in Canada

Canada recorded the highest number of deaths, with 172 Indian students losing their lives there. The United States followed with 108 deaths, the United Kingdom with 58, Australia with 57, and Russia with 37.

There were also 18 deaths in Ukraine, 24 in Germany, 12 each in Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Cyprus, and eight in China. These figures reflect the widespread presence of Indian students across the globe and the various risks they face.

Additionally, Singh reported that 19 Indian students were killed in attacks overseas during this period. Canada again had the highest number with nine deaths, followed by the United States with six.

Singh emphasized that the safety and security of Indian students abroad is a top priority for the Indian government. Indian missions and posts abroad maintain regular contact with students enrolled in foreign universities to ensure their well-being.

Deportation of Indian Students

In response to another question, Singh mentioned that 48 Indian students were deported from the United States over the last three years. While the US authorities do not officially share reasons for deportation, possible causes include unauthorized employment, unauthorized withdrawal from classes, expulsion or suspension, and failure to report optional practical training employment. These issues can lead to the termination of a student’s visa, resulting in unlawful presence and eventual deportation.

The government continues to work towards providing support and ensuring the safety of Indian students studying abroad. Regular communication and assistance from Indian missions aim to address and mitigate the challenges faced by these students in foreign countries.
