Two people have died and 20 others were injured after about 18 coaches of a train bound for Mumbai derailed in Jharkhand. The Howrah-CSMT Express derailed near Badabamboo, around 80 km from Jamshedpur, at approximately 3:45 a.m.
Rescue teams were rushed to the site immediately following the derailment notification, and a rescue and relief operation is ongoing, officials said.
“Two people were killed and 20 injured as 18 coaches of Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed near Barabamboo. Rescue operations are on and an NDRF team is rushing to the spot,” West Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Kuldeep Chaudhary, who is camping at the accident site, told PTI.
Senior Railways official Om Prakash Charan reported that a nearby goods train also derailed, though it is unclear whether the two incidents occurred concurrently. Of the 18 derailed coaches, 16 were passenger coaches, one was a power car, and one was a pantry car.
The injured received first aid from the Railways’ medical team and have been transported to Chakradharpur for better treatment. The exact cause of the derailment is being investigated, officials said.
Several trains on the route have been cancelled or diverted following the mishap. Buses have been arranged for affected passengers, and the Indian Railways has issued helpline numbers for assistance.
