The European Union has approved a significant 2.4 million euros in humanitarian aid to support communities affected by recent severe floods in India, northern Bangladesh, and the Philippines. This funding will help provide essential services to the hardest-hit areas, including cash assistance, food, clean water, and sanitation.

Assistance to Bangladesh and India

In response to the devastating floods, the EU has allocated 1.2 million euros to assist the most affected communities in both Bangladesh and India. This aid is crucial as these regions have been struggling with heavy monsoon rains, which have caused widespread damage and hardship. The European Union’s aid aims to offer relief and support to those who need it most during this challenging time.

Earlier this year, in May, the EU provided over 22.6 million rupees to Manipur, India, to help with the aftermath of a severe hailstorm and heavy rainfall. This assistance was crucial for the people in the worst-hit areas.

Additionally, the EU’s ongoing support also addresses the impacts of Cyclone Remal, which affected nearly one-third of Bangladesh. This new funding builds on the 30 million euros already allocated to Bangladesh earlier in the year, which primarily supported Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar and responded to other recent emergencies, including heatwaves and cyclones.

In the Philippines, 1.2 million euros will be directed towards aiding communities in Mindanao. This region has been heavily impacted by monsoon rains and typhoons Prapiroon and Gaemi, which have led to severe flooding. The new funding will help provide much-needed relief and support to those affected by these natural disasters.

This recent funding is in addition to the 3.1 million euros already allocated to the Philippines this year. The previous aid was primarily focused on addressing ongoing crises in Mindanao and responding to earlier flood events.

EU’s Commitment to Crisis Management

Janez Lenarcic, the Commissioner for Crisis Management, emphasized that the EU is committed to increasing its support for the regions hit hard by this year’s monsoon season. He stated, “The beginning of this year’s monsoon season is proving very hard for people in the north of Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines. The EU is stepping up its assistance to the most affected populations, so they can receive much-needed relief.”

This new humanitarian aid from the European Union highlights its continued commitment to providing support during times of crisis and ensuring that those affected by natural disasters receive timely and effective assistance.
