On Tuesday, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezeshkian. Gadkari represented the Indian government at this important event.
Minister Gadkari conveyed warm wishes from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Pezeshkian as he assumed office. This gesture highlighted the strong relationship between India and Iran.
During his visit, Gadkari and Iranian officials discussed the positive state of bilateral relations. They focused particularly on the development of Chabahar Port, a key project both countries are working on together. This port is seen as a crucial element in strengthening trade ties not only between India and Iran but also with other regional partners.
Chabahar Port is expected to boost regional and global trade by providing access to landlocked countries like Afghanistan and those in Central Asia. This development is anticipated to significantly enhance economic connectivity in the region.
The swearing-in ceremony followed a tragic event in May, when the former President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials, died in a helicopter crash in Iran’s remote northwest. This led to snap elections in the country.
Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian emerged victorious in the presidential elections held earlier this month. According to CNN, citing Press TV, Pezeshkian won more than 16.3 million out of the 30.5 million votes counted in the runoff. His ultraconservative rival, Saeed Jalili, received over 13.5 million votes.
The voter turnout for the elections was reported to be 49.8 percent, as stated by the election headquarters under the interior ministry. Pezeshkian was elected in a second round of voting after securing the highest number of votes in the first round. The initial round witnessed the lowest voter turnout for a presidential election in Iran since its establishment in 1979.
