Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) saw heavy rain on Wednesday evening, bringing much-needed relief from the humid weather. However, the rain has caused significant traffic congestion throughout the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for most parts of the capital over the next two hours. According to their latest update, clouds have gathered over Delhi from all directions, and widespread light to moderate rain with some intense spells is expected.
Air India has issued an advisory due to the bad weather. They warned that flights to and from Delhi might be affected and advised passengers to start early for the airport. Slow traffic and waterlogging could cause delays, so it’s important to check flight statuses before heading out.
The IMD has also cautioned that the rain may lead to slippery roads, low visibility, traffic disruptions, and localized waterlogging in low-lying areas. This could make traveling around the city difficult and potentially dangerous.
July has been a hot month for Delhi, with the average maximum temperature recorded at 35.8°C, slightly above the long-period average (LPA). High humidity levels—over 50% on most days—have made it feel much warmer. The Heat Index (HI), or ‘real feel’ temperature, reached 45.8°C, making the weather very uncomfortable.
On Tuesday, Delhi experienced its highest maximum temperature for the month this year, with the temperature reaching 39.3 degrees Celsius, which is five degrees above the normal for this season.
The IMD has forecasted intermittent showers in Delhi until August 5, indicating that the rainy weather will continue for several more days.
