The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) 2024 will begin on August 14. NMC Secretary B Srinivas shared this information with ANI, stating that the registration process for students might start earlier.
The entire process is expected to continue for two months and will be conducted online in four rounds. Eligible students from across the country can participate, and seats will be allotted based on merit and the students’ preferences.
Revised NEET UG 2024 Results Released
The National Testing Agency (NTA) recently released the revised results for NEET UG 2024, which saw a significant drop in the number of top scorers. Originally, 67 candidates had achieved a perfect score of 720 marks. However, the revised results show that only 17 students managed to achieve a perfect score, marking a 75% decrease in the number of toppers.
Controversies and Corrections
The initial results, announced on June 4, were surrounded by controversy. Six students were initially placed at the top due to extra marks awarded for time lost during the exam because of invigilator errors. Additionally, 44 students received “grace marks” for incorrectly answering a basic physics question.
However, the Supreme Court ruled that there would be only one correct answer and that no marks should be awarded for incorrect responses. Following this ruling, a retest was conducted for students who had lost time during the exam.
After these corrections, the number of qualified candidates dropped slightly from 1,316,268 to 1,315,853, a difference of 415. The NTA conducted a retest on June 23 for 1,563 candidates who had experienced time loss during the original exam on May 5. This year’s NEET UG exam saw a large number of participants, with 1,331,321 female candidates, 996,393 male candidates, and 17 transgender candidates taking part.

Exam Details and Participation
The NEET UG 2024 exam was held on May 5 and saw a substantial turnout. Over 2.4 million candidates appeared for the exam, which took place at 4,750 different centers in 571 cities across India and in 14 cities outside the country. The re-examination conducted on June 23 aimed to address the issues faced by candidates who lost time during the initial exam.
With the revised results and the upcoming counselling process, students can now look forward to securing seats in medical colleges based on their performance and preferences. The NMC’s online counselling system aims to ensure a smooth and efficient allocation of seats to deserving candidates.
