Twenty people have gone missing following a cloudburst in Shimla’s Rampur, near the Samej Khad hydroelectric power project. The disaster management authority was alerted early today, prompting a swift response. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap and District Police Chief Sanjeev Gandhi are on their way to the affected site. Kashyap confirmed, “According to the information we received, about 20 people are missing from the area affected by the cloudburst.”
Rescue teams face challenges due to disrupted road connectivity and are hiking to the site. Similar incidents have been reported in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, where cloudbursts in Rajban village caused road blockades and landslides. Mandi Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan ordered the closure of educational institutions and vocational training centers in Padhar subdivision for safety reasons.
In neighboring Uttarakhand, monsoon fury has claimed lives. A cloudburst in Tehri Garhwal district resulted in two fatalities and one injury. The deceased were identified as Bhanu Prasad (50) and Anita Devi (45). A State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) spokesperson reported recovering two bodies and rescuing an injured person from a deep ditch.
Additionally, in Haridwar, two children died and nine others were injured when a dilapidated house collapsed due to heavy rainfall. The deceased were identified as Aas Mohammed (10) and Nagma (8). District Magistrate Dhiraj Singh Garbyal stated that three of the injured are in critical condition, while the rest are stable but hospitalized.
