External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently delivered the 7th Jasjit Singh Memorial Lecture at the Centre for Air Power Studies in New Delhi, where he discussed the significant role of rising nationalism in shaping global affairs.
Jaishankar highlighted how nationalism has been a driving force behind independence movements, economic growth, and the rebalancing of power in the world. He emphasized that this trend has contributed to the emergence of a multipolar world, where multiple powers share influence rather than a single dominant force.
Global Shifts and National Interests
Jaishankar explained that the increasing presence of nationalism will lead to a world marked by greater individualism and caution regarding external commitments. He pointed out that while some regions still cling to old globalization ideals, nationalism is often seen negatively there.
In contrast, nationalism has played a positive role in many developing countries, helping them achieve independence and growth. Jaishankar stressed that India’s national interests align with global interests and that India should carefully evaluate global events to benefit from them.
The External Affairs Minister also discussed the current state of global politics, noting that there are multiple divides and frictions between competing powers. He stated that these divides are often overlapping, creating a complex international landscape.
Jaishankar underscored the need for India to make strategic choices that align with its national interests, especially when those interests are directly impacted by global developments. He advised adopting a multi-vector foreign policy approach, focusing on national security and comprehensive national power.
India’s Economic and Strategic Position
Jaishankar highlighted India’s growing economic strength, noting that the country is currently the fifth-largest economy in the world and is expected to become the third-largest soon. He emphasized that with this economic stature comes a responsibility to contribute to global stability. India’s role in stabilizing the uncertain global environment is crucial, and Jaishankar stressed that it is in the country’s interest to support rules and laws that promote international stability.

The goal is to balance national interests with global responsibilities, ensuring that India remains a key player on the international stage while fostering stability and cooperation.
Jaishankar’s statements provided a comprehensive overview of how rising nationalism is reshaping global dynamics and emphasized the importance of strategic national interests in a rapidly changing world.
