Dozens of protesters clashed with police and ignited fires in Sunderland on Friday, as unrest spread after Monday’s tragic killing of three children in Southport. Demonstrators, targeting a mosque, hurled stones at police in riot gear, overturned vehicles, and set a car ablaze.
Northumbria Police Chief Superintendent Helena Barron emphasized the priority of public safety, stating, “When we became aware of the planned protest, we increased our policing presence in the city.” Despite their efforts, officers faced severe and sustained violence, leading to the hospitalization of three police officers and the arrest of eight individuals for violent disorder and burglary.
The Sunderland protest is one of over a dozen anti-immigration demonstrations planned across the UK this weekend, including in Liverpool, near the site of the Southport killings. These protests coincide with anti-racism counter-demonstrations. British police have bolstered their presence nationwide, and mosques are tightening security measures.
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of the girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in Southport, a crime that has shocked the nation. Subsequent violence erupted in Southport, Hartlepool, and London, fueled by false information on social media suggesting the suspect was a radical Islamist migrant.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer made his second visit to Southport, expressing solidarity with the grieving community. “As a nation, we stand with those who have lost loved ones in this heinous attack,” he stated.
British police chiefs have pledged to deploy significant resources over the weekend to deter further violence. National Police Chiefs’ Council Chair Gavin Stephens assured swift justice through increased intelligence and prosecution capabilities.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Council of Britain has urged mosques to strengthen security. Secretary General Zara Mohammed reported that many mosques are receiving threats, prompting heightened vigilance.
Police in Southport remain prepared to address any disorder with “extensive plans and considerable police resources” on standby.
