Ukraine’s military reported on Saturday that it had sunk a Russian submarine in Sevastopol, a city controlled by Russia. They also attacked a southern Russian airfield and hit oil depots and storage facilities in the Belgorod, Kursk, and Rostov regions.
The Ukrainian defense ministry announced on the social media platform X that a Russian submarine, named the B-237 Rostov-on-Don, had sunk in the Black Sea. They mentioned that the attack took place at the Sevastopol port and also caused significant damage to four launchers of the S-400 anti-aircraft “Triumf” defense system. So far, Russia has not commented on this attack.
Attacks on Russian Facilities
The Ukrainian military also reported overnight attacks on various Russian facilities. They claimed to have hit an ammunition depot at the Morozovsk airfield, where Russian forces stored guided aerial bombs and other equipment. Additionally, they attacked several oil depots and fuel storage facilities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy emphasized the importance of destroying Russian combat aviation. He stated that it is fair to strike at Russian airfields and called for a joint security solution with Western allies. Zelenskiy has been urging Western countries to allow Ukraine to use their weapons for long-range attacks on Russia, targeting military sites near the border and beyond.
Russian Response and Damage
According to local officials in Russia, a drone attack caused a fire at a fuel storage depot in the Kamensky district of Rostov region. In Belgorod, drones launched by Ukraine set fire to an oil storage depot. The fire was extinguished, and no injuries were reported.
Ukraine has significantly increased its use of long-range drones this year. These drones aim to damage Russian oil facilities, which fuel the Russian military and economy. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing for 29 months, with both sides continuing to engage in aggressive military actions.
