Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena Blames AAP for Mismanagement
A storm of controversy has engulfed Delhi’s Asha Kiran Shelter Home following several tragic deaths, leading Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to criticize the AAP-led Delhi Government. On Saturday, Saxena sharply criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for their alleged mishandling of the shelter home, especially concerning the appointment of the administrator.
The Delhi LG office issued a strong rebuttal to AAP’s claims, stating that the shelter home administrator was appointed by the Social Welfare Department, a department fully under the control of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers.
The statement from LG Saxena’s office emphasized that while the officer was initially posted to the Social Welfare Department with LG’s approval, the appointment to the Asha Kiran Shelter Home was made by the Delhi government. The LG office condemned AAP’s press statement as “blatantly wrong” and accused the party of “abuse and scoot,” suggesting a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
Saxena’s statement further criticized the AAP government for its failure to appoint a new minister to oversee the Social Welfare Department after Raj Kumar Anand’s resignation. The LG’s office pointed out that CM Kejriwal had not appointed a new minister even after accepting Anand’s resignation, reflecting a lack of political oversight in a department that handles sensitive issues.
In response, AAP leader and Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj has demanded answers from LG Saxena regarding the continued presence of an allegedly corrupt officer as the shelter home’s administrator.
Adding to the severity of the situation, official reports have revealed a disturbing increase in deaths at the Asha Kiran Shelter Home. July alone saw 14 deaths out of a total of 25 recorded since February 2024. The high number of deaths, particularly in the past month, has raised significant concerns about the management and conditions at the shelter home.
AAP’s Failure to Address Crisis
Despite media pressure, a group of AAP MLAs initially faced resistance when trying to visit the shelter home, further fueling criticism of the management’s transparency and accountability.
The ongoing controversy surrounding the Asha Kiran Shelter Home highlights a clash between the Delhi LG’s office and the AAP government, with both sides accusing each other of mismanagement and corruption. The increasing number of deaths at the shelter home has added urgency to the call for a thorough investigation and better oversight to ensure the welfare of its residents.
