The death toll in the Wayanad Landslides has crossed 400 and at least 200 people are still missing; rescue operations are continuing for the seventh consecutive day.
Notably, Kerala’s Wayanad district was hit by massive landslides in the early hours of July 30, 2024 following incessant rainfall. According to the media reports, bodies of over 400 people have been recovered in the last six days and the death toll is expected to increase further.
While a lot of people have been rescued and the bodies of hundreds of people have been recovered, about 180 people still remain missing. Teams of NDRF and also the armed forces had reached the incident spot and had started the search and rescue operations immediately after the Kerala districts were hit by the deadly landslides.
Today, the Wayanad Landslides Rescue Operations marks day seven; the officials have been searching for and rescuing the people who are trapped, for the last one week.
In a bid to ensure transparency about the donations to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) for landslide relief in Wayanad district, the Kerala government on Sunday set up a complaint redressal cell to address queries about the funds’ utilisation.
The government order said, ‘The cell will be set up on a temporary basis in the Finance Department’. The decision also comes in the wake of campaigns and criticisms from certain quarters against donations to the CMDRF.
