On Wednesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the bye-elections to the Council of states from many states including the one Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha.
Presently, there are 12 casual vacancies in the Council of States from 9 states. The ECI has decided to conduct 12 separate bye-elections for the vacant Rajya Sabha seats.
Earlier, one Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha had fallen vacant after the resignation of Mamata Mohanta on July 31, 2024. Her term was scheduled to expire in April 2026.
There are two vacant seats in Assam, two in Bihar, one in Haryana, one in MP, two in Maharashtra, one in Rajasthan, one in Tripura, one in Telangana and one in Odisha.
Mamata Mohanta, who belongs to the Kudumi tribals of Mayurbhanj, resigned from the BJD and Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. After resigning as Rajya Sabha MP and from the primary membership of the BJD, Mamata Mohanta had subsequently joined the BJP.
In her resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman, Mohanta wrote, “I Do hereby tender my resignation from the membership of Rajya Sabha, today, i.e. July 31, 2024. I have taken this decision consciously.”
