In a tragic incident on Saturday afternoon, Charubala Haokip, the wife of former Saikul MLA Yamthong Haokip, died after a bomb exploded at their home in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. Charubala Haokip, aged 59, was a member of the Meitei community and lived in Ekou Mulam, an area primarily populated by the Kuki-Zomi community.
According to local police, the explosion occurred around 3 PM, although it was reported early on Sunday morning. The device used in the attack was a locally made improvised explosive device (IED), which had been hidden among waste material at the couple’s residence.
The explosion happened when Charubala Haokip burned the waste material, causing the IED to detonate. Fortunately, no one else at the house was injured or killed in the incident.
Authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the explosion. The police suspect that the attack might be related to a family dispute involving Yamthong Haokip. The former MLA had recently bought a piece of land adjacent to property owned by his uncle’s grandson, leading to a conflict. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact motive behind the explosion.
