Kolkata is currently grappling with the horrific rape and murder of a 32-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College, a crime that has sent shockwaves across the nation. The incident, which took place in a government-run hospital, has brought the West Bengal government and its police force under severe criticism, with many questioning their ability to maintain law and order.

The body of the young woman was discovered on Thursday night in the seminar hall of the hospital. The initial autopsy report revealed gruesome details: the victim was bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, and had multiple injuries on her body, including her leg, neck, and lips. These findings point to the brutal nature of the crime, which has left the public horrified and demanding swift justice.

In response to the outcry, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal stated that the investigation is ongoing. Sanjoy Roy, the primary suspect, has been arrested. Roy, who was not a hospital employee, was a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. This position involves assisting regular police officers but without the same level of training or accountability. Despite this arrest, there are growing concerns that the investigation might not be thorough, as many believe that more people could be involved in the crime.

Mr. Goyal acknowledged the pressure his department is under, stating that they are exploring all leads and questioning everyone connected to the case. He mentioned that a helpline has been set up for doctors to anonymously share any suspicions they might have. However, this assurance has done little to calm the fears and anger of the public.

Government’s Inaction and Public Outrage

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has promised that the investigation will be completed by next Sunday. However, there is widespread skepticism about the state government’s commitment to delivering justice. Critics argue that the government has consistently failed to address the rising crime rate in Kolkata and across West Bengal. The fact that the suspect was a civic volunteer, employed by the police, has only added to the outrage, raising questions about the recruitment and oversight of these individuals.

Many people believe that the government’s response to this tragedy is insufficient and that the investigation might be compromised. The public’s faith in the state’s ability to protect its citizens has been severely shaken, with calls for the case to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police fail to make significant progress soon.

This incident is not isolated; it is part of a broader pattern of lawlessness and mismanagement under the current West Bengal government. Critics argue that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her administration have repeatedly failed to ensure the safety of women in the state, with incidents of violence and crime becoming increasingly common.

The situation in Kolkata has reached a tipping point, with many accusing the government of turning a blind eye to the deteriorating law and order situation. The tragic death of this young doctor is a stark reminder of the government’s failure to protect its citizens, and it has sparked a nationwide demand for accountability and justice.

As the investigation continues, all eyes are on the West Bengal government and the Kolkata Police. Will they be able to bring the perpetrators to justice, or will this case be another example of the state’s inability to uphold the law? The next few days will be crucial in determining whether justice will be served or if the victim’s family and the public will be left disappointed once again. How is it that in a state led by a woman, women continue to be so unsafe?
