India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Tuesday that India is prepared to work closely with the President of the United States, no matter who is elected in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections.
At the launch of Indiaspora’s impact report in New Delhi, Jaishankar emphasized India’s confidence in its ability to collaborate effectively with whichever candidate wins the presidency. He remarked, “Generally, we don’t comment on other people’s elections because we also hope others don’t comment on us. But the American system will throw up its verdict. And, I’m not saying this just as a formality, but if you look over the last 20-odd years, maybe a little bit more for us, we have every confidence that we will be able to work with the President of the United States, whoever he or she will be.”
Global Challenges and India’s Perspective
Jaishankar also addressed the current global situation, describing it as exceptionally challenging. He pointed to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, as well as the broader impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m an optimistic person and generally tend to think of solutions to problems rather than the problems that come out of solutions. But I would say with a great deal of sobriety, that we are going through an exceptionally difficult period,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Jaishankar expressed concerns about the next five years, highlighting issues such as the Middle East conflict, turmoil in Ukraine, and disturbances in Southeast and East Asia. He also noted the lingering effects of COVID-19 and its impact on global stability.
The External Affairs Minister highlighted significant economic challenges that the world is facing, including trade difficulties and foreign exchange shortages. He pointed out that climate events are adding to global instability and causing severe consequences.
Impact on India-U.S. Relations
As the U.S. presidential elections approach, India will closely monitor the developments, understanding that the outcome could influence bilateral relations. The elections have the potential to affect trade policies, investment flows, and immigration policies- areas that are crucial for India’s interests.
India’s focus will be on how the new administration, regardless of who is elected, will handle these vital aspects. The goal is to ensure that the strong partnership between India and the U.S. continues to thrive and that both nations work together to address mutual interests and challenges.
India is committed to maintaining a productive relationship with the United States and is prepared to engage with whichever government comes into power. The outcome of the U.S. elections will be closely watched, as it will play a significant role in shaping the future of bilateral cooperation and mutual interests.
