On August 15, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will mark his 11th consecutive Independence Day celebration by unfurling the national flag at the Red Fort. This annual event is not just a tradition but a significant occasion where the Prime Minister outlines his government’s agenda, reflects on achievements, announces new policies, and addresses pressing issues.

This year’s Independence Day address will be particularly notable as it will be Modi’s first address of his third term as Prime Minister. By doing so, he will surpass former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who addressed the nation 10 times from 2004 to 2014. Modi will then stand just behind Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, who each addressed the nation 17 and 16 times respectively.

The central theme of Prime Minister Modi’s speech is expected to be ‘Viksit Bharat,’ or ‘Developed India.’ This theme will likely focus on the government’s vision for a prosperous and advanced India. There is speculation that Modi might address the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh, particularly the situation concerning minority Hindus, given the heightened activism from Hindutva groups.

Modi may also reflect on the mandate his government received for a third term, despite a reduced majority. He is anticipated to highlight the impacts of reforms, development programs, and welfare measures that have been implemented over the past decade. These efforts have been aimed at improving the lives of people across the country.

As the opposition parties have become more vocal with their populist promises, there is curiosity about whether Modi will announce any new initiatives or expand existing welfare programs. These announcements could play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and bolstering support for his government.

Jammu and Kashmir will likely feature prominently in his speech. Since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the region has seen significant changes in security and development policies. Recently, increased terror incidents in the Jammu division have drawn attention. The Supreme Court has set a deadline of September 30 for the conduct of Assembly elections in the region, which might be a point of discussion.

The Prime Minister is also expected to discuss key decisions taken since he began his third term in June. These include expanding housing schemes for the poor, enhancing road and rail infrastructure, and proposing changes to laws regulating Waqf boards and properties. These moves have faced criticism from opposition parties, adding another layer of interest to his address.

Independence Day holds a special place in the hearts of Indians. It is a day to remember the struggles and sacrifices made for freedom and to reflect on the country’s progress. This year’s address by Prime Minister Modi will provide valuable insights into the future direction of India, showcasing how the government plans to address current challenges and drive development.

As the nation prepares to celebrate this important day, the anticipation around Modi’s speech highlights the significance of Independence Day not only as a celebration of freedom but also as a moment for strategic reflection and forward planning for the country’s future.
