President Droupadi Murmu has conferred the prestigious Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) upon Indian Air Force (Garud) Junior Warrant Officer Vikas Raghav for his remarkable bravery and professionalism during a challenging humanitarian operation in Kangra on August 15, 2023. This honor recognizes his “act of exceptional courage” in the face of severe floods, where his leadership and quick thinking were crucial in saving numerous lives.
JWO Vikas Raghav, a member of the elite Garud Flight, was tasked with leading a rescue mission in the flood-affected region of Kangra. Displaying unparalleled valor, he spearheaded his team through dangerous conditions, directly saving 152 people and contributing to the overall rescue of 494 individuals.
One of the most harrowing moments of the operation involved the rescue of a paralyzed 68-year-old patient, a mother with an eight-day-old infant, and two expectant mothers. JWO Raghav meticulously prioritized the evacuation, showcasing exceptional ingenuity by improvising a harness for the paralyzed patient, ensuring her safe extraction from the flooded area. His care and attention extended to the infant, whom he safely retrieved without using a harness to avoid any risk of choking due to the helicopter’s downwash.A
His bravery was further highlighted during another sortie, where he rescued four infants by securely wrapping them in his arms using a tactical belt, a technique that has no standard procedure or precedence. Despite the immense risks involved, JWO Raghav’s actions were a testament to his courage and dedication to duty.
The Ministry of Defence has lauded JWO Vikas Raghav for his exceptional courage and professionalism throughout the mission. His fearless actions in the face of extreme danger have earned him the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), a fitting tribute to his extraordinary service to the nation.
