After the brutal crime at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and the hooliganism on the protesting students on the eve of Independence Day, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a 24-hour nationwide strike. The IMA issued a press release late Thursday night informing about the nationwide strike.
The Indian Medical Association has said that in view of the incidents of violence against doctors, services will be closed for 24 hours from 6 am on Saturday, August 17 to 6 am on Sunday, August 18. However, all essential services will remain restored during this time. The injured will be treated, but regular OPD will remain closed and no elective surgery will be done. The IMA further said that this shutdown will be in all those areas where modern medical doctors are providing service.
The IMA says that the attack on the protesting doctors at RG Kar Medical College on Wednesday night is very unfortunate and condemnable. The IMA needs the sympathy of the nation towards the just cause of its doctors. We just want the safety of the doctors.
According to the BJP, there is a deliberate attempt by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government to shield those involved in this heinous crime. Sukanta Majumdar has pointed to purported screenshots from WhatsApp chats within the doctor’s team, suggesting the existence of a drug and sex racket operating within the hospital.
