Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, a Russian woman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, providing for a harsh penalty for raising funds for an enemy country.
A Russian court on Thursday sentenced Ksenia Khavana, who holds dual US and Russian citizenship, to 12 years in prison. Ksenia has been sentenced for raising funds for the Ukrainian army. She was accused of treason. Khavana was arrested in Yekaterinburg in February.
Reports said she confessed to her crime in a closed-door hearing last week. Khavana reportedly obtained US citizenship after marrying an American and moving to Los Angeles. She returned to Russia to meet family.
Russia’s Federal Security Service said she had actively collected funds in the interest of one of the Ukrainian organizations. It was later used to purchase medical supplies, equipment, weapons and ammunition for the Ukrainian armed forces.
