During the investigation, several important information related to the people whose pictures have been posted by the police on social media as ‘suspects’ in the incident of breaking into RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has come to light. But local people say that the police only investigated, but did not arrest anyone.
Local people told that many of the people whose pictures have been posted by the police on social media are considered close to the ruling party. Some are known as ‘party people’. At the same time, when inquiring about many people, political offices are being pointed towards them instead of their homes.
People of the area do not want to talk openly about them due to fear. Some people only said in a low voice, “The police came, but did not arrest them. They are people of big leaders, who will arrest them!” When they were asked which ‘big leaders’ they were, no answer was received. However, some people said that they are associates of Trinamool leaders.
Some of the people identified in the photographs released by the police were from a slum near Belgachia metro. A photo of Mohammad Jabbar, a resident there, has been circulated on social media, in which he can be seen among the crowd.
Neighbours claim that Jabbar’s elder brother is known as a ‘party leader’ in the area. However, Jabbar was not found at home. His mother said, “I don’t know anything about my son. The police came, they talked, if they wanted to catch him, they could have caught him.” Such incidents are raising questions on the functioning of the police. Although the police have confirmed the arrest of 25 people in this incident, locals say that the real culprits are still roaming free and the police have arrested only a few non-influential people. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal rejected these allegations and said that the possibility of such an incident could not have been imagined.
He said, “If there was a lapse in gathering information, it might have happened, but we have tried to control the situation by deploying adequate police force.”
