In response to the widespread outrage and protests over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a new directive. The MHA has mandated that all state police forces across India submit detailed reports on the law and order situation every two hours.
According to the notification sent out by the MHA, all states and Union Territories are now required to provide updates on the current law and order situation related to the Kolkata case through various communication methods, including mail, fax, or WhatsApp. This new requirement took effect on 16 August, with the MHA emphasizing the need for timely updates to monitor the situation closely.
The MHA’s directive reads, “Regarding two hourly law and order situation reports. The competent authority has desired to monitor the law and order situation report of your state/UT against the murder of a trainee woman doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. Henceforth, a continuous two-hourly law and order situation report in this regard may kindly be sent to the MHA control room by fax/e-mail/WhatsApp from 4 pm today (16/08/24).”
This order comes in the wake of the brutal murder of the doctor, which has ignited nationwide protests, particularly within the medical community. The victim was found dead on 9 August, and the case has drawn significant public attention due to its shocking nature and the perceived lapses in response and investigation.
A senior official from the MHA explained the reasoning behind this new measure. “This will ensure that reports concerning crucial issues reach in time,” he said, adding that there were several lapses observed in the handling of the Kolkata case. The official stressed the importance of swift action in such critical situations.
In light of this development, state authorities have begun complying with the new reporting requirements. The goal is to ensure that all relevant information is promptly communicated to the MHA, helping to maintain a better grip on the law and order situation and respond more effectively to similar incidents in the future.
The tragic incident in Kolkata has highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures and timely action in dealing with violent crimes, particularly those involving healthcare professionals. The MHA’s latest directive underscores the seriousness with which the central government is addressing this case and the broader issue of public safety.
