In a surprising turn of events, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has been issued a notice by the Kolkata Police, accusing him of spreading “wrong information” related to the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ray has been asked to appear at the police headquarters at 4 pm today, as per reports.
Ray’s Questions on Investigation Spark Controversy
Ray took to social media platform X, where he raised several questions regarding the ongoing investigation into the horrific crime. One of his key claims was that a sniffer dog was brought to the crime scene three days after the incident, leading him to question the delay. He also asked who might have been supporting the main accused, Sanjoy Roy, allowing him to wield such power.

In his tweet, Ray emphasized the need for a fair investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and called for the custodial interrogation of both the ex-principal of the medical college and the Kolkata Commissioner of Police. Ray suggested that such interrogation was crucial to uncover the truth behind the initial claims that the death was a suicide.
The Kolkata Police quickly responded to Ray’s allegations, stating that his claim about the sniffer dog was incorrect. According to the police, the dog was brought to the crime scene twice: first on the morning after the crime and again three days later. As a result, Ray is now being accused of spreading misinformation, a serious charge under Section 35(1) of the BNS.
The controversy has not only led to action from the police but has also caused tension within the TMC. Senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh publicly criticized Ray for demanding the questioning of the Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Vineet Kumar Goyal, in connection with the case. Ghosh argued that the Commissioner had done his best in handling the case and that Ray’s comments were unfortunate, especially coming from a senior party leader.
Interestingly, Ghosh did not extend his defense to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was also implicated in Ray’s demands for interrogation.
The situation is further complicated by the recent Calcutta High Court judgment, which harshly criticized the police for their handling of the case. The court condemned the police for allowing a mob to vandalize the hospital, noting that the police were unable to protect themselves, let alone maintain order. Several TMC supporters have been arrested in connection with the vandalism.
It has also come to light that the mob intended to target the seminar room on the third floor, where the victim’s body was discovered. However, due to confusion over the floor number, they vandalized the second floor instead. This unintentional error may have preserved the crime scene, while the police officers reportedly hid in bathrooms or behind protesting medical students during the chaos.
Ray’s recent actions are not the first time he has taken a stand in this case. Earlier, he joined protests over the incident, which drew criticism from within his party.
