In a strong message to the INDI Alliance, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday criticized the alliance for its “appeasement politics” and failing to deliver justice to refugees seeking citizenship in India. Shah was speaking at an event in Ahmedabad, where he distributed Citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
Amit Shah emphasized that the CAA is not just a law for granting citizenship but also a means to provide justice and rights to people who have been persecuted in neighboring countries because of their religion. He accused Congress and its allies of neglecting Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain refugees, who have faced torture both in their home countries and in India due to the appeasement politics practiced by previous governments.
“From 1947 to 2014, these refugees did not receive justice because Congress and its allies were more focused on appeasing their vote bank rather than addressing the needs of persecuted communities,” Shah stated. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking decisive action to provide justice to these refugees through the CAA.
Shah also addressed the historical context of the partition of India, which he said was based on religion and led to massive suffering for Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. He pointed out that many families were destroyed during this time, and Congress had promised to grant citizenship to these refugees but failed to do so.
“When the BJP came to power in 2014, we made it our mission to implement the CAA and fulfill this promise. Although the law was passed in 2019, its implementation was delayed due to misinformation spread by certain groups. Let me make it clear, CAA does not take away anyone’s citizenship, it only grants it to those who deserve it,” Shah clarified.
He highlighted the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh, noting that their population had decreased from 27 percent at the time of Bangladesh’s creation to just 9 percent today, largely due to forced religious conversions.
In addition to his statements on the CAA, Amit Shah also inaugurated and laid the foundation for several development projects in Ahmedabad. Among these were the Oxygen Park and a lake, with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also in attendance.
Shah praised the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s initiative to plant 30 lakh trees in 100 days and urged the citizens of Ahmedabad to participate in the campaign. He called on everyone to plant trees in honor of their mothers, as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’ initiative launched by Prime Minister Modi, stressing the importance of addressing environmental challenges like climate change and global warming.
With these remarks, Amit Shah reinforced the government’s commitment to both refugee rights and environmental protection, while also taking a firm stand against the INDI Alliance and its approach to governance.
