In a shocking incident that has left Kolkata shaken, a junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered at a hospital, leading to widespread outrage and a violent mob attack on the facility. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has blamed opposition parties for instigating the mob violence. However, allegations have surfaced that some of the 37 people arrested by the state police in connection with the vandalism are affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Among those arrested is a 24-year-old gym instructor, Souvik Das, who confessed to participating in the attack. Das claimed that he got caught up in the emotions of the moment and did not fully realize the consequences of his actions.
The case has raised serious questions about the handling of the investigation by the Kolkata Police. Many, including opposition leaders, have criticized the police for what they believe were significant failures in the initial stages of the probe. A key figure in these criticisms is Bhattacharya, who has been vocal about the perceived inadequacies in the police’s investigation.
Bhattacharya, in an interview with India Today TV, expressed his deep concerns about how the investigation was carried out. He pointed out that the hospital administration initially informed the victim’s parents that their daughter was sick. However, just half an hour later, they claimed she had committed suicide. This sudden change in the hospital’s account of events raised suspicions about the truth of what had happened.
Adding to the confusion, Bhattacharya questioned why none of the doctors present at the hospital could immediately confirm whether it was a case of suicide or murder. He suggested that the police did not conduct the investigation as thoroughly as they should have, which led to the case being transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court.

One of the most troubling aspects of the investigation, according to Bhattacharya, was the initial attempt to cremate the victim’s body quickly. He highlighted that the body in such cases is crucial evidence, and any rush to dispose of it could hinder a proper investigation. The Kolkata Police reportedly claimed that the family members had opted to cremate the body, but this was later disputed when student leaders from the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), including Minakshi, intervened to ensure a proper probe was conducted.
Bhattacharya raised further concerns by questioning why the authorities were attempting to take the body outside for a post-mortem when these issues were being brought to light. The situation has led to widespread criticism of the Kolkata Police and calls for a more transparent and thorough investigation.
The case continues to unfold, with many demanding justice for the victim and accountability for those involved in both the crime and the subsequent investigation. The involvement of TMC workers in the mob attack has also added a political dimension to the case, further complicating the situation for the ruling party in West Bengal.
