On August 20, 1979, Chaudhary Charan Singh resigned from the position of Prime Minister of India due to political instability and a crisis within his government. After the Emergency ended in 1977 and subsequent elections, Morarji Desai from the Janata Party assumed office as Prime Minister. However, Desai’s government was short-lived, and he resigned on July 27, 1979. Chaudhary Charan Singh was sworn in as Prime Minister the following day. Charan Singh’s government initially received support from the Congress party, led by Indira Gandhi. However, their relationship soon soured. Indira Gandhi had expected that Charan Singh’s administration would drop the ongoing investigations into her actions, but Charan Singh, committed to tackling corruption, continued the probes. This led to Indira Gandhi withdrawing her support, causing Charan Singh’s government to lose its majority. Consequently, he resigned on August 20, 1979.
