The country sits on the Indian tectonic plate, which is colliding with the Eurasian plate. Due to mountainous terrain, the country’s northern and northeastern regions are highly prone to earthquakes.
India is divided into four seismic zones, and most of the northern and northeastern region falls under Zone 4 and Zone 5, which are considered to be highly active seismic zones. Jammu & Kashmir falls in Zone 5 which is the most active region in the earthquake in the region.
