On Tuesday the Election Commission issued a notification for the first phase of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. In the first phase, voting will take place in Kishtwar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts.
Notably, nominations for the first phase can be made till August 27. Scrutiny of nominations will be done on August 28 and withdrawal of nominations will be done till August 30.
In this phase, voting will take place in 24 assembly seats Pampore, Tral, Pulwama, Rajpora, Jainpora, Shopian, D.H. Pora, Kulgam, Devsar, Doru, Kokernag (ST), Anantnag West, Anantnag, Srigufwara-Bijbehara, Shangus-Anantnag East, Pahalgam, Inderwal, Kishtwar, -Pader-Nagseni, Bhaderwah, Doda, Doda West, Ramban and Banihal.
The Election Commission announced assembly elections in two states Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana last Friday. Voting will be held in Jammu and Kashmir in three phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1 respectively. Voting will be held in Haryana in one phase on October 1. Counting of votes for both states will be held on October 4.
The roll is important since the boundaries of many assembly constituencies have been changed following the delimitation exercise and the increase in the number of assembly seats from 83 to 90 across Jammu and Kashmir.
There are 87.09 lakh voters in Jammu and Kashmir, of which 44.46 lakh are male, 42.62 lakh are female, 3.71 lakh are first-time voters, and 20.7 lakh are young voters.
