The Bombay High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident in the alleged sexual assault case of two Kindergarten girls in Badlapur in Maharashtra’s Thane district. The high court is set to hear the matter today.
It comes after a city-based lawyer on urged the Bombay High Court to take suo motu cognisance of the matter. Advocate Ajinkya Gaikwad approached Justice Bharati Dangre with his plea in the evening, but the judge asked him to approach the two-member bench. Justice Dangre said, ‘A single bench cannot hear such matters’.
Last week, a 23-year-old male school attendant allegedly sexually assaulted two minor girl students aged 3 and 4. This incident triggered protests across the town on Tuesday and Wednesday with protesters blocking railway lines which disturbed the local train service in the area. After the matter came to light, the accused was booked and arrested.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday the Maharashtra government ordered the formation of a special investigation team headed by senior IPS officer Arti Singh to investigate the case.
A local court extended the police custody of the accused till August 26. The attendant at the school was produced before a magistrate at Kalyan in Thane district amid elaborate security arrangements. The state education department directed all schools in the state to install CCTV cameras within a month, in the wake of the Badlapur sexual abuse case.
