The Centre’s Ayushman Bharat Yojana, has brought changes in the country’s health care sector, it has become a topic of discussion across the country.

Some people know it as Modi Care while some know it as Arogya Bharat. But the scheme is Ayushman Bharat. Notably, it has a provision of Rs 5 lakh annual insurance amount per family. Poor can get free treatment in private hospitals.

Modi government has gone one step further in its third term and has proposed to break the limit of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh for women. This proposal has been prepared by the Group of Secretaries (GoS) of 9 central ministries on the social sector.

According to the media reports, the respective proposal is based on the recommendations of the committee constituted under the chairmanship of NITI Aayog member VK Paul. This proposal will be formalized on the basis of the committee’s report and will be sent to the Finance Ministry and the Cabinet for approval.

This scheme covers 55 crore people of about 12 crore families of the country, which is 40 % of the total population. Along with this, the government is preparing to increase the number of beneficiaries from 55 crores to 100 crores. According to the media reports, over 7.37 crore people have availed the facility of treatment in hospitals under this scheme till June 20, 2024.

The reason behind increasing the amount of this scheme is to strengthen the medical infrastructure in the country. At the same time, focus has also been laid on increasing the bed in private hospitals in the proposal. So far there are about 7.22 lakh private hospital beds under the scheme. It is proposed to increase it to 9.32 lakh by 2026-27 and 11.12 lakh by 2028-29.
