Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British India and the first Governor-General of independent India, was assassinated in Ireland on August 27, 1979. He played a key role in planning and successfully implementing the partition of India and Pakistan, with India gaining independence on August 15, 1947, during his tenure. On the day of his death, Mountbatten was on vacation with his family and was aboard a fishing boat when it exploded, killing him and several family members. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) claimed responsibility for the assassination, citing it as retribution for the British occupation of Ireland. In response to his death, India observed seven days of mourning.
