In a horrifying new chapter of Afghanistan’s ongoing tragedy, the Taliban have unleashed a fresh wave of draconian laws aimed at erasing the very existence of Afghan women from public life. These new “vice and virtue” edicts, sanctioned by the Taliban’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, are a grotesque assault on the fundamental rights and dignity of women. The Taliban’s latest decree requires women to cover every inch of their bodies, including their faces, as suffocating mentally as it is physically. The Forbiddance doesn’t stop here, even a woman’s voice is now deemed a sin, forbidden to be heard in public or private.
