Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next president of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He will take over as ICC president from December 1, 2024.
At present, Greg Barclay is the current ICC president, whose term will end on November 30. After the unopposed selection of Jay Shah, the ICC has said that he was the only candidate for the post. Only he had filed nomination for the post of president. While the current president Barclay had distanced himself from this race. In this way, 35-year-old Jay Shah will become the youngest ICC president.
At the same time, Jay Shah is the fifth Indian to become ICC President. Before Shah, Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar have led the ICC.

According to the ICC, on being elected president, Jay Shah said, “I am overwhelmed to be elected as ICC President. I am committed to working with the ICC team and our member countries to take global cricket forward. We are standing at a critical juncture where it has become very important to balance the co-existence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of new technology and introduce our flagship events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket even more popular. Our effort is to make cricket more popular around the world. The inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 shows that cricket is growing. I believe it will take the sport forward in an unprecedented way.”
After his election, Shah expressed his intention to increase cricket’s global reach and popularity, especially with its upcoming inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics – a moment he sees as a pivotal opportunity for the sport’s growth.
The Indian cricket fraternity on Tuesday extended best wishes and congratulations to the newly-appointed International Cricket Council (ICC) President Jay Shah.
Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir also congratulated Jay Shah. Gambhir wrote on X, “Many congratulations Jay Shah bhai! I know that world cricket will grow a lot under your exceptional leadership!”
